
Adventure Maine Guides, LLC (AMG) provides safe, high-quality, impactful wilderness canoeing and backpacking trips for individuals or groups interested in exploring Maine’s majestic rivers, lakes, forests and mountains. For over 30 years, Norm Greenberg and Dave Menges have led transformative outdoor adventure-based wilderness trips for thousands of people. They are both Registered Maine Guides, life-long educators, and veterans of decades of programming for many outdoor organizations, especially the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. Whether you are brand-new to canoeing or backpacking or already proficient, AMG will facilitate a safe, educational, and highly impactful expedition for you.

As modern life pulls us indoors, we are committed to creating meaningful wilderness experiences that renew the body, mind, and spirit for people of all ages. We began Adventure Maine Guides in order to provide transformative, outdoor adventure-based wilderness trips to more people, young and old.

Adventure Maine Guides offers pre-planned and custom trips across Maine’s waters and backcountry for camps, groups, families, and the public. From 2–3 day outings to multi-week expeditions, we handle trip planning, food, transportation, and group gear—you bring personal equipment and clothing. Canoe trips on lakes and rivers, flatwater or whitewater are our specialty, but we lead backpacking trips to remote places accessible only by foot as well.
We also provide consulting for camps and outdoor programs, as well as single- to multi-day trainings in Maine Youth Camp Trip Leader permits, Maine Educational Trip Leader permits, map and compass navigation, whitewater and flatwater canoeing, canoe poling, backpacking, expedition and menu planning, and team building. For over 35 years, Dave has devoted his professional life to educating and inspiring people to reach their full potential. Since 1989, he has served in assorted roles for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School primarily in Maine, including as a Lead Instructor, Course Director, and Associate Director of Custom Programs. Throughout his time at Outward Bound, Dave has supported a wide range of programming including working closely with Middle School, Veterans, Pathfinders, Outdoor Educators, and Semester Leadership courses. Outside of HIOBS, Dave’s extensive teaching and leadership experience includes over a decade as a classroom teacher at the Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich, Connecticut, 17 years as the Head of Lower School at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia, and one year as the Interim Head of School at the Sabot School, also in Richmond, Virginia. Dave earned his Master’s in Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor’s in History from Hobart College.
Dave is a Registered Maine Guide, is certified both as a Wilderness First Responder and a Lifeguard. Through the American Canoe Association, Dave is also a Level 4 Whitewater Canoe - Tandem Instructor and a Level 3 River Canoeing - Solo Instructor. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dave enjoys reading, playing the guitar, biking, and kayaking. He and his wife, Kim, have three grown children.

Since 1989, Norm has dedicated his life to facilitating growth and development in many types of people. As a Lead Instructor and Course Director at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Maine, New Hampshire, Maryland and Florida, he worked extensively with young people from ages 5-28, as well as a diverse selection of adult groups. Norm also worked at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, NC, where he designed and led experiential education programs, and instructed whitewater kayaking and canoeing, mountain biking, climbing and adventure racing. Norm was a semi-professional Adventure Racer for 10 years, earning top 10 finishes in competitions around the globe, and founder/director of Racing Ahead, Inc. an Adventure Race production company. He also served in the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa.
Norm has taught middle and high school Social Studies, and currently teaches Outdoor Leadership at the Telstar Freshman Academy. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelors degree in Anthropology, and from the University of Southern Maine with a Masters in Education. Norm is a Registered Maine Guide, and is certified as a Wilderness First Responder. When he is not guiding, Norm enjoys cooking, photography, climbing, biking, skiing, swimming and traveling. Norm has 2 grown children.
